What is Artificial Intelligence(AI)?

What if someone comes up to you and ask "What is artificial Intelligence?".I'm sure most of you would shrug and say "I don't know,I'm not a tech geek."Truth is,Artificial Intelligence or better known as AI is used everyday from government surveillance medical diagnosis and complex robotics to everyday electronics like smart phones (e.g Siri,GPS,auto correct ),laptops and video games(e.g Dota 2,Call Of Duty,etc).Thus,the need to know and understand Artificial Intelligence is compulsory.

Definition of A.I

Artificial Intelligence (AI) is the fifth branch of computer science which is used to study and develop intelligent machines and software.

In more detail it is a system that perceives it’s environment and takes actions that maximize it’s chances of success and gives the illusion that we are dealing with actual or real intelligence.The main purposes or goals of AI research is learning,knowledge,reasoning,planning,communication,the ability to manipulate objects and perception.

History of A.I

The idea of modern AI has already been thought about by ancient philosophers and already existed in myths and stories about artificial beings which are endowed with intelligence by their craftsmen.The first modern AI research however was based in the 1950’s by IBM and unfortunately was subject to critiques,financial setback and technical problems like limited computer power etc.

Applications of A.I

Surveillance and security

AI that is used for surveillance ’Data mining’ is another AI used for surveillance and security.It uses the extraction of information from social media,forums and etc. and it analyses the pattern of the information for further use.E.g. the system uses the information you put on your twitter profile and uses it to guess your food preference or music preference. This method can be used by detectives or the forensics team to solve murder cases and more.
Technologies such as facial,fingerprint and voice recognition is also another type of AI system used in security.Usually seen in Mission Impossible movies,it is used to validate the identification of a specific person and give access to a restricted place,information or command.E.g in Mission Impossible,Ethan Hunt needed to scan his eye before being informed about his mission.

Health and Medicine

Clinics and Hospitals can use artificial intelligence systems to organize bed schedules, make a staff rotation, and provide medical information.Artificial Intelligence allows the system to learn and perceive the data about the patient which help doctors and nurses keep track of the patient and better recovery of the patient.

The computed tomography (CAT scan) used in hospitals to produce x rays or tomographic images of parts of the body also uses Artificial Intelligence.

Electronics

As you might already know,Artificial Intelligence exist in almost every recent electronics system such as smartphones,laptops,computers,video game software and many more .For example,Siri which is an intelligent personal assistant and knowledge navigator which works as an application for Apple Inc.'s iOS.

One entertainment media that uses a lot of Artificial Intelligence is Video Games.Teenagers might be thinking of those programmed characters you play with or against in video games at the mention of the word AI.AI in video games started of very humble in video games with the characters simple and relatively “stupid”.Now,the programed characters can get as smart as the players themselves. E.g the hunters from The Last of Us(2013).

Finance

Banks use artificial intelligence systems to organize operations, invest in stocks, and manage properties. In August 2001, robots beat humans in a simulated financial trading competition.

Financial institutions have long used artificial neural network systems to detect charges or claims outside of the norm, flagging these for human investigation.

Creative Virtual has deployed artificial intelligence customer support systems, or automated online assistants, at E*TRADE, HSBC, Intuit and Lloyds Banking Group, to assist financial services customers with services such as checking an account balance, signing up for a new credit card or retrieving a forgotten password.

In aviation,Artificial Intelligence is used for surrogate pilots for combat and training.The GPS used on the plane has a more complex AI than the ones in cars as it has to calculate altitude,wind speed etc.

There are many movies and games that uses Artificial Intelligence .

In these stories the worst of all scenarios happens, the AIs created by humanity become self-aware, reject human authority and attempt to destroy mankind

Atom is a beaten up chrome coloured sparing bot small in comparison to other fighting bots . he has a chip on his back too . Atom also can move by himself without the control of humans indicating Artificial Intelligence .
